If I want to start a new forum, which version of SMF should I choose?

    SMF 1.1.11

    OR

    SMF 2.0 RC2

What's you opinion? (RC2 means release candidate 2)

The RC version has not moved in around a year. I do not know how much actual development is going on with that project. If bugs are found in RC 2, are they going to get fixed right away?

That is why I suggest you go with 1.1.11. If a problem is found in the 1.X version, its usually fixed in 24 - 48 hours.

All right, I'll stick with 1.1.11. It's a little hard to find mods, since it came out December 1. Do most people just use the main SMF site to find mods or another?

    SMF 2.

It now has a paid subscription module and reputation systems and so many more extra beta features attached to it. The only problem that I found when I was testing it was that it doesn't come up right when used in Google Chrome, I think this problem can be fixed though.

SMF2 is the best if you are looking for good solid built in modifications.

    Cheers!

It is difficult in general to translate from one version to another?

Well, In my opinion, it is not really.

If you have messed around with the database on a mega level, then yes, it is going to bring you nothing but problems. Although those are rare cases and mainly with big forums. Small once don't have much of database problems due to fewer entries.
