Both are important. They are not each others alternative so that we can choose one of them.
As per my view both the site maps are equally important. The objective of XML site map to get fast indexing in the search engine and HTML site map's objective is to provide better navigation to the website visitors.
Both are good for seo, XML site map is helpful for search engine to crawl website url, and html sitemap is helpful for visitor to find specific page.

You should build both. But the XML one in my opinion is mandatory. HTML sitemap is used for both users and search engines but is difficult to create when you have large sites.

HTML is better because it has the new features as well
HTML & XML both are good. one for search engine which is XML Sitemap and HTML sitemap for user experience.
Both are equally important in q\a website. HTML sitemap is mainly for users' navigation while XML sitemap is for search engine crawlers. By using XMl sitemap, search engine crawlers will know that which pages they have to crawl in a website.
To have both Html and Xml Sitemaps in a site is beneficial. XML site map is for web spiders crawl and index the web pages and HTML site map is for users to navigate from one page to another within the web site.
HTML and XML both are very important for a website. But there are some difference between their work. html specially used for site's design. and xml used for site's link.
Search engine spider use the sitemap in the form of xml to fetch or crawl the data. And html sitemap is useful to user purpose.
Both HTML sitemap and XML sitemap are helpful in SEO. XML sitemap is used for search engine crawlers to visit pages of a websites and HTML sitemap is used for visitors to visit specific page of a website.
As everyone is preferring XML sitemap over HTML sitemap and few also mentioned XML sitemap is crawler friendly; is that mean CRAWLER don't/cant read or CRAWLS HTML sitemap? IF CRAWLER can read read/CRAWLS HTML sitemap then why XML sitemap is proffered or (some of you said better for crawler)?
reate a XML sitemap for search engines.
use "Google XML Sitemaps" wordpress plug and it will generate a special XML sitemap which will help search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask.com to better index your blog.
Both sitemaps are used by search engines. Search Engines are smart enough to read all the languages. As far as tools are concerned, I' am not a big fan of using free tools because they simply kills the purpose of sitemaps. Sitemaps are used to make your site crawl and re crawl faster. Lets discuss a scenario, Your site is already in the sitemap and all URLs are cached by Google. On one page you have added some more content and now you want Google to re crawl that newly updated page. Best way to deal with such issues is by changing the last modified tag in the sitemap. If you use free tools then it will change the last modified date of all the URLs.
All sitemaps should be on the root : That's not correct
Both are best for the user HTML is best for the crawler XML is best.
Both Html and Xml sitemaps have their own importance and are beneficial for the sites.
An HTML sitemap is an old school landing page for users to find all of your pages on your web site via single page. An XML sitemap can also be multiple files, but they are not visible to a user, only a search engine spider.
From search engine point of view, both of these sitemaps are important for a website but if we talk about the priority, HTML sitemap stays first. As an html sitemap is built not only for search engines, but also for internet users, so it is always important to have an html sitemap.
i find html more better then xml one because it is very lightweight and that xml ones becomes more bigger and bigger in size with the growth of your website.
XML Sitemap is best for using ON Page SEO optimization
