MySQL isn't really considered a programming language, but the most common scripting languages used on the web today are PHP, ASP.NET, Perl, Java, Javascript, Coldfusion, Flash Actionscript.

Assembly/binary code is the most widely used programming language and runs even where high level languages can't reach. ( well, get used to my sense of humor :) )

HTML as basic frame and PHP+mySQL as the core coding. Some ajax and jquery also helps to make it look even better. Those are the most popular right now. Asp won't be too popular with "normal" web developers like us :)

True, most dynamic/server side scripted pages I see are written with PHP instead of ASP.NET. I do work with ASP.NET at work a lot because we utilize many Microsoft Server applications. I generally prefer PHP or ColdFusion when working on personal projects though.

In fact every programming language is same. Every language has loops, variables, functions, class etc. Just there is implementation differences. In fact we only need one simple programming language and Java is a good candidate. Crappy languages like PHP sprang out because Java was slow to reach the market. Also Flash and action script came out because java applets were slow, and could not gain popularity. I would recommend Java for everything, but on practice I am a PHP programmer. In the past I learned C++ but I had to develop in Object Pascal, because Delphi was the best development tool in those days. Mostly you do not have the freedom to choose.

PHP development has been rapid in recent years. According to EDC statistic in 2006, PHP was ranked top 3 programming languages globally as a web scripting language. The other two languages were Java and .NET frameworks. What shocked people was, the growth of PHP has come to 37%, higher than the other two.
