It depends upon your geographic location, If it is Uk then go for co.uk, That will help UK members to get registered. And purchase a domain with meaningful name to describe the type of your forum. For example; If your Forum is for Interior Designing and limited scope to co.uk, then you should try to find domain like : interior-design-uk.com or interiordesing.co.uk - both will help your visitors.

I would say nowadays that the top 4 choices would be .com, .net, .org and .co.

Definitely a .com extension should be your first choice, only if a domain with this extension is already registered you may look for a .net one.

Everyone is going with .com as the best, but the truth is that if you are in the UK, Canada, or the US .org is better right now.It is because the Search Engines give more gravity to .org and .edu than others.

One problem is that there are many marketing firms that are now using this and are polluting the .org field with scum-like sites, so, eventually this may not be the extension to own.

The .com is the best and most secure but there are others to consider.

    My opinion is .com first.
    .org second.
    .net third
    .co fourth.

But the Internet changes everyday and new options abound so maybe the PK or the CH will be the next best alternative.

While choosing the domain always give first preference to .com. If it is not available, then .org Is the Second Best Option you can go for. Then 3ed is .net. Hopefully, it will be useful for you.

    It seems ok.

The best word for a milt topic forum is general or off-tpoic in my opinion.

You can use any Extension while hosting a Forum. But when you are going to buy for a Domain name, check whether its available with that Extension or not. To check for the Availability, visit this site Tucktail.com. Here they also provide you to buy a Domain name with various Extensions like .com, .net, .org etc..
