- Submitting website to social bookmarking sites
- Participating in social networking sites and related communities
- Writing guest posts for related blogs to your niche.
- Creating link baits

So long as it is done all organically, it should help.

And, it will give huge amount of traffic to your website.. If you write unique and quality content and submit it into quality article sites, then it will be best way for to get better SERP..

In my opinion 'Guest blogging' is also a good technique to get backlinks.

Well with all due respect but i think after the update of Google Panda, neither any Article or a Blog website is considered being a natural way of creating backlinks. But the part regarding traffic is acceptable....

Social Bookmarking, directory, article submission, press release, blog commenting and forum posting.

all methods have their own importance.

There are lots of ways on how to get backlinks like what other members have suggested. You can also check your competitor's backlinks and try to get links on those quality sites they're linking to.

I'll say that natural links are best, so for it you'll have to get links naturally or will have to male your link building strategy so perfect that Google can't recognition that it's done artificially. This will work for very long-term.

For now, guest blogging link is best in my opinion and next is article on web 2.0 sites & social media.
