Im not totally sure in the salary point of view , both are good niches and if you are good at what you do then you get the premium clients with the premium wages

I am not really sure either on what the typical salary if for these types of positions, I suppose you could find some information on it through a search.
I found some good information here.
    PayScale - Web Designer Salary
PayScale - Graphic Designer Salaries, Graphic Artist Salary

The main differences are , that web designer will be doing things only for web sites, and they may not necessarily be doing any graphics work. It could be mostly coding and layout using things like HTML, PHP, ASP , etc..... They might be working along side with a graphics designer. Or they might do graphics as well.

A graphics designer could be working on web site graphics or on other graphics related to print such as magazines, books, newspapers etc. Or they could be doing graphics for Multimedia presentations, movies, animation or TV.

I don't think that it has any difference in sort of job and salary.
So you can go through it well.

The design approach is also quite different - graphic design principles don't translate one for one to web design - there are usability and legibility issues quite different from graphic design.
From a salary perspective it's definitely good to learn not only html but also some java/flash etc.

In my opinion if you are a good in graphics design and you know the basic html codings you could be both graphic designer and web designer but graphic designers deals with print media unlike web designers deals with online web.
