Really Simple Syndication or simply RSS is best described as a news feed of a certain site/s. It is a technology that is being used by millions of web users around the world to keep track with their favorite website/s.

RSS is sometimes called Rich Site Summary, it is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, web blogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.

RSS allow users to keep up with their favorite sites in a time saving, automated manner. These feeds can either be read in readers, or aggregators (an application in which aggregates syndicated web content, such as blogs, headlines, and blogs, in one location for easy viewing.) or emailed. It saves on surfing time. Since an RSS feed provides a summary of the related article, it saves the user’s time by helping him/her to decide on which items to prioritize when reading or browsing the net.

RSS ad significant traffic to your site if you have regularly updated content. But if you have primarily static content RSS is not that important.

rss feeds also give you alot of seo power with pinging abilities from sites such as ping-o-matic. I've experimented with a site that had no backlinks. Just made posts in wordpress that ping and the site became a pr3 just from that.

Basically, apart from the "real simple syndication" term, this is an XML file, that resides on a reachable URL location on your site. The reason why it is powerful is that it contains link and short description to your posts, thus making it simple and easy for your content to be redistributed while spreading your links across the web.

Just add to this that the "loop" ( more than one entry ) is in the

"subtree" i.e. you can ( and should ) have more than one item entry in the "feed".

RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication". It is a way to easily distribute a list of headlines, update notices, and sometimes content to a wide number of people. It is used by computer programs that organize those headlines and notices for easy reading.

    RSS WORK:-

RSS works by having the website author maintain a list of notifications on their website in a standard way. This list of notifications is called an "RSS Feed". People who are interested in finding out the latest headlines or changes can check this list. Special computer programs called "RSS aggregators" have been developed that automatically access the RSS feeds of websites you care about on your behalf and organize the results for you. (RSS feeds and aggregators are also sometimes called "RSS Channels" and "RSS Readers".)
Producing an RSS feed is very simple and hundreds of thousands of websites now provide this feature, including major news organizations like the New York Times, the BBC, and Reuters, as well as many weblogs.

RSS is a technology that is being used by millions of web users around the world to keep track of their favorite websites. In the ‘old days’ of the web to keep track of updates on a website you had to ‘bookmark’ websites in your browser and manually return to them on a regular basis to see what had been added.

RSS feeds really couldn't be simpler. They are mainly simple text files that, once submitted to feed directories, will allow subscribers to see content in very short time after it's updated sometimes as short as 30 minutes or less; it's getting faster all the time.
