My old blog had some comments from spam bots, well nothing new about that, but the comment section has a captcha verification system. The captchas aren't easy to read.
Are spambots able to solve captchas somehow or how would that happen? I don't really think there's a human typing the spam comments and solving the captcha. Any ideas?

Would you be able to provide an example image of the CAPTCHA? If it is as hard as you say it is to read them with your eyes, then I doubt the spambots are solving them.

It's more likely that the spambots are taking advantage of a weak spot in security, whether it be a badly designed captcha algorithm (it's guessing them with a high degree of accuracy), or there's some sort of flaw that allows them to bypass it entirely.

Spambots have been able to solve them for years, there are other methods to restrict them a little more like question and answer modifications and more advanced images verification . There has been a real influx of bots recently though, they are getting much more intelligent which in alot of cases is because they are semi moderated by humans.

There is a rec list diary talking about the thousands of "new members" flooding into Daily Kos over the past few weeks. As pointed out in the diary, all of the members share a common characteristic: a user name that looks more or less legitimate, followed by some digits.
