True. You just need to work hard to get your targeted ranks and the competition are all over so you better think ahead what will be the best for your site. And i think one of those is to play wisely.
It is advisable to use long tail keyword than short tail. Because aside from its uniqueness it is also effective to avoid mass keyword competitors.
You should optimize your website for the keyword you want to rank high for, targeting long tail keyword make it bit easier.
If you are choosing keyword that's only not enough and also you can do for off page optimization.Like to get quality back links using forum,blogs, article submission,regular updates in website etc.,
