Please help me out..

I cant seem to open add or remove programs or system restore, in fact two or three categories in control panel wont open though they do show up in left hand panel when start is clicked, nor will txt files open in notepad in fact i cant open notepad though changing txt files in properties to open with word works..Ive recently done a system restore so dont really want to go through all that again if i can avoid it....Avast anti virus does give a couple of alerts on booting up one in tmp internet files and as i remember one in windows temp folder but ive run a full virus scan and though it found some it dealt with them as far as im aware..Oh i cant get into security centre either..

Have you tried doing a repair install of XP?
I would also recommend you reinstall any software which pops up with errors

I believe you are Still Infected, Run another Full Updated Virus Scan and this time after the scan is completed and things seemed fixed, Then TURN OFF system restore and then restart your pc, then put a check mark back in to turn system restore back on.
Now see if everything is back to normal!
