1. I've started a massive SPAM purge, any accounts that have spammed are being removed, also for a short period new user signups are disallowed until the SPAM cleaning is finished.

Both do-follow and no-follow links are important. When in good proportion they benefit the site.

This defines a code as “nofollow”. So “nofollow” backlinks are not important in terms of search engines as it is not crawled. The comments section mostly have no follow links. But that does not mean that these links are useless. You can still get some quality traffic from these also.

A no follow link does not provide any advantage in PageRank, nor does it assist in SERPs for positioning of the page. A no follow link is made by a nofollow link HTML tag. The search engine is notified by the nofollow tag to not count the no follow link.

    <a href=”http://www.thespecificnameofthewebsite.com/” rel=”nofollow”>Link Text</a>

There would be more spam if no follow links weren’t present

Where can No follow links be used:

Comments, paid links, forums, or whatever that Google terms as “untrusted content”

Nofollow links attributes do not allow search engine bots to follow link. That means if the website owner is linking back to you with nofollow attributes, it does not pass on link juice.
