A link farm is a form of spamming the index of a search engine (sometimes called spamdexing or spamexing). Other link exchange systems are designed to allow individual websites to selectively exchange links with other relevant websites and are not considered a form of spamdexing.

Link farm is a black hat thing and when search engine caught you, you will penalize or in worse case you will get banned.

How about a "private mini link farm"? With this, I created a network of blogs using web2.0 properties. When I need a link, I am going to create posts into these blogs with links pointing to the website I am optimizing. It is very effective since the anchor texts are well targeted since you have the full control over it.

This wouldnt really be classified as link farming as you are simply creating backlinks to one of your sites via a few of your other sites. Many people practice this method online

3 links hardly constitutes a farm but do avoid duplicating content or massive cross linking.

Yes, information above are true. Link farm is not a good practice in seo if you are aiming for a long term effect of your site.

Google dislikes links between unrelated content some Link Farms have divided their links into categories, much like the Yahoo! directory.

Link Farming is like harvesting a lot of potential back links even though they're just weeds or worthless links from other spammy websites.

It’s worth knowing that while one gets penalized for linking to a farm, there is danger Google will ban you if a farm links to your page, as it is supposed that one has no control over who link to them.

Can you show us some links that was included on link farm? I just wanted to know how they look like and how they get into it. What if your site was already there? was there a chance to remove your link?

It's all well and good to know that you shouldn't link to link farms, but how do you know if a site is one or not? My general rule is to think about how I'd feel if I clicked a link and landed on the page - if I thought I'd be annoyed, I won't link to it. Regardless of whether it's a link farm or just an annoying site. But there are some things that can tip you that the site isn't a good idea to link to. For one thing, if they solicit you asking you to post 100+ links on your site, don't do it. They're essentially asking you to turn your site into a link farm, which will get you banned from Google.
