Key elements to SEO in my opinion are:

-Targeted Title, and meta tags
-Targeted and relevant content congruent with meta tags
-Sitemap
-robot.txt
-Regularly updated relevant content
-Backlinks from related sites

There are many elements to be considered in doing SEO. One of these is the keyword and the domain name.

Hafsoh is right though you can play along with different techniques around us, sometimes we need to experiment in able to know what will happen next if we do like this or like that. SEO never needs in doing a link build and just promoting. We need to study what will be the most effective way for us to do.

I also recommend you the above things to be kept in mind while doing SEO for your site.
Find keywords which have high search volume and Website updation with those keywords in the content properly and try to build relevant backlinks using those keywords. Follow these steps and surely you will get your needful results.

2) Keyword demand matrix of keyword set, using Wordtracker and Google Trends keyword data
3) Keyword ranking report across the 3 major engines for terms in the <title> tags
4) Backlink profile of top 10 competitors
5) Duplicate content across the site- <title> tags in particular
6) Pages that should be no followed and no indexed
7) Evaluation of internal link structure
8) Identify spider traps, if present
9) Crawl and index rate by Google and other major engines
10) Conversion leakage points: are conversions via emails and phone numbers being tracked?
