    Hello,

Will be getting a new home Desktop PC in the near future.
    Typical home usage; nothing fancy.

Willing to go up to about $ 1,200

Have read many, many, rants and opinions on how poor Dell is these days re
    quality, and also their service.

Frankly, pretty much the same kind of thing for HP.

I have never had an HP computer,.

I realize that since this is a computer Forum, all you folks probably went
thru the same kind of analysis (and agony) in trying to decide what
to purchase, HP system or dell system?.

Personally if i was going to spend that much on a PC i would get a custom build with out all the bloat , however i can understand people wanting the hassle free option with a branded system.

Dell and HP are basically the same thing but if i had to choose it would be a HP, although im not sure what the perceptions of each company is in the US , Dell here in the UK hasnt got the best of reputations to be honest.

It would be nicer if you could have 'custom made' your computer but then like the above post, one will choose the hassle free option than doing it that way. Although both brands claim to be the best it will definitely depend on the user!

I would agree with that however after using a PC for so long Mac are a learning curve, I actually started out on a Mac ( Macintosh II, yes that old lol ) and they always have been amazing machines. Since then however ive always gone for high end Sony Vaio's , Last month i decided to go to the Apple store to see if i could get back into the Mac and get a new laptop . On a Based unit machine with a mouse i could manage easy but with a laptop its a different world. No sensor on the mouse pad so you have to physically push down on the whole pad. Hated it , If there was a sensor on the mouse pad id have one in a shot.

    But thats just me lol

Build your own or have someone or company build one for you.

That way you get exactly what you need where you need it. For example if your not playing games there would be no point having a top end graphics card.

First of all, if you dont mind a mac, buy an apple.

However, if you prefer Windows, I would ask you to go for DELL. They have better Customer Care Support. HP is good, but its Customer Support is not as good as DELL.

I really don't care for brands. Let's say I'd stay away from Acer, after a lot of issues with an Acer Aspire one. Otherwise ..

I happen to have 2 laptops: a huge HP Pavilion which is my 'working machine' and a small Dell Inspiron to watch movies or take to the 'throne' with me :D

Just look at the specs, test it a little and go for one or another.

I do like Dell, but it drives me mad that you end up paying an extra 20% just for the name.

Recently I got a non branded PC and it to be fair it's been just as good if not better than any Dell I've ever had.

Both are great companies providing awesome solutions in computers/laptops. I am a HP user for last 3,4 years and had only rare issue which is bearable because any electronic system can have issue any time.
I only prefer Dell in case of workstations.
