How do I get a new blog to rank high on search engines? It already has a few posts with quality content.

If you have already at least 10 post in your blog you can now do link building, follow the basics in SEO and start promoting your blog.

Placing the 'keyword' in the following will help you:

•title of the post
• title tag (if different from the title of the post)
• heading tags (not just h1, either)
• internal linking
• links to the post's permanent link
• outbound links
• URL
• alt tags

I think all SEO tactics work for sites would work for blogs, too.
Of course, fresh contents are essential key for a blog success.

Just a reminder, manage your time and make sure that you won't compromise the quality content that you should constantly be providing just because you are busy promoting your site, doing seo stuffs.

Naaah I dont agree. I`ve got 3-4 "blogs" with only 4-5-6 posts, and I began building links for them almost right away. Doesnt matter how many posts you`ve got as long as it all looks natural. I mean, you dont exactly wanna use Xrumer for a site with no content and stuff like that..
Actually, I`ve been on the first page of Google with a medium competitive keyword with a website with absolutely no content at all, and only a few links..

just keep on building inbound links slowly and steadily using social sites, book-marking sites, article sites, directories, blogging sites and commenting on other blogs. Ideally you should have several pages of your blog already built up before publishing. The more word count for each page the better. 400 or more word count per page is ideal. 1000 word count per page is excellent. Moreover, keep up making long posts with your main keywords and keyword density in mind. Do this on a regularly basis. Not more than 1 post a day and Not less than 1 post a month. Continue building backlinks and tweaking your site. These 3 things will slowly but surely lead you to the fist page of any search engine.
