I entered a domain name to order, and it said it was already in use but that for $18.99 I could backorder it. Is that a yearly fee or one time fee until the name becomes available? Also, should I contact the current owner directly since their registration info is listed publicly and ask if they want to selll it to me? What would be the procedure to do that? Thanks!

Im assuming this is with godaddy ? Godaddy will basically keep tabs on the domain and if the domain becomes in a state of expired they will try and grab it for you, however if its a domain other people would like you would probably face some competition and it could then get expensive . Best bet is to contact the owner and see if they will sell for a reasonable price imo

Riverwire is right, if you backorder a unavailable domain name, you need to wait when either the registration expires or the owner wish to sell the domain. So, it's best to just directly contact the owner of the domain via whois lookup. If the details are on private, you can pay some to gain access and get contacts for the domain owner.

Domain backordering is a kind of service, which most of the registrars provide. The backorder service permits you to register a domain name which is soon going to expire and holds the right to that particular domain name before anyone else steps forward. However, not all domains names can be backordered, because the owner or the domain name may renew the domain before it gets deleted permanently.

As said by Riverwire, you might have to pay much more for the domain name that you are willing to pay. So, its better to get in touch with the domain owner and see if he would like to sell the domain at reasonable price.

    Hello,

Backorder is just a testing a luck system.

When you put backorder of domain the company taking backorder simply try to register it from their network. Remeber if many people are trying to get the same domain then there is just a small luck of getting domains.

Backorder doesnt means that you will get the domain.

There's no cost to place a backorder. If the domain becomes available, they try to get it for you. If they get it, that's when you get charged. It's worth a shot, and backordering is probably cheaper than making them an offer. If the backordering doesn't work, you can always go the offer route.

Before you think about contacting the current domain owner check to see how long they have owned it. if they have owned if for a number of years and renewed it several times it's unlikely that they will be wanting to sell. You may be better off registering a new domain that is close to the one you are after and start working on it's ranking.

Yes thats a good point. You can even buy the similar domain name in different extension or you can also change some words or add some words to get a domain name which is unique but good.

Well, most of the times its a bad luck when you contact the owner of a domain name directly. It is a fact that no one would like to sell their domain name when it becomes their brand. Hence, it is better to opt for same domain names with different extensions. The search engine results depends on various other factors as well. So, book a domain name for your website and work hard on the SEO part.
