It is never easy to build a forum, more work and effort is needed in order for someone to build a forum. And it is definitely harder to transform a forum into a good forum and to make a forum famous. Sometimes, even if you ensure that your forum has quality, it is hard to encourage the people to join your newly made forum.

Let us talk about the forums, the problems that are usually being faced by forum owners and the solution for those problems, the essential things that one must know in order to build a good forum and the strategies on how to get people to join your forum.

The Essential Things to Know in Starting a Forum:

    • Consider your target audience. This is a very vital phase of forum building. If you know what type of people you want to cater, then you will have a clearer vision on what should your forum be. For example: You want to target the people who are crazy about playing offline and online games, by knowing this, then definitely, you should make a gaming forum.
    • Know the trends and what your target audience wants. By knowing the trends, you will be able to use this as a plus points to your forum. It is a must to have updated and trending topics which are related to what your forum is all about.
    • Develop the appearance of your website. The first look at your forum will mean a lot. Visitors judge not only by what they read, but also what they see. Be sure that at the very instance that a visitor came to your page, that visitor will find your forum worth joining.
    • The navigation should not be hard to understand. It is a very basic thing, people don't like dealing with complicated and unfriendly websites/forum. So what you need to do is to provide everything in an easy way.
    • Be sure that everything in your website/forum is working. Make sure that there are no broken links because it can affect your whole forum. Have a regular review and tests to ensure that everything is working properly.
    • Provide quality contents. It is really hard to start a forum and fill every sections with a lot of posts in a blink. This is what makes it hard for someone who is just starting building a forum. But what you need to do is to make sure that there is something worth reading in every section of your forum, aside from your forum rules and other sticky.
    • Do not make useless and 'spam' posts just to impress your visitors that there are numerous posts in your forum. This could give a negative impact to your forum and may cause people to not join your forum.
    • Just keep posting informative things in the forum. Stay up-to-date so that if someone visits your forum, he/she can get something useful and by this, the chance of being visited once again will increase.
    • Select your staff correctly. The moderators must love the forum community, and you yourself also must love the forum life. The moderators should act professionally and must be able to adapt themselves to what is happening in the forum. The moderators should not just slack, they should help with the best they can.
    • You should always create an atmosphere which your visitors would feel that they belong and that their opinions are important. Do not be discouraged and just ignore the people if they are just few, because you will never know what they can do for your forum.
    • Continue with the advertising. Be patient. You can not really get a sudden increase of forum members in just a blink. It takes a lot of time and effort.
    • Host forum contests, this is optional, but by doing such thing, you will build a stronger tie between you and your members.
    • Be an active owner.
Strategies to Have More People in Your Forum:
    • Advertise. This is a simple word, but it is broad in a sense. How can you effectively advertise your forum? You should be open-minded. Do not stay in one method of advertising, there are a lot more strategies and ways that the internet has to offer. The internet is giving you tons to opportunities, it is just up to you to decide on which one to use. Join websites and other forums related with your forum. Be active in the websites that you joined in and share your ideas with them, this is a way to have the people trust you and believe you. By being friendly and helpful in other websites, then you will be able to build a strong reputation and it will also be a great help in your advertising process. While you are making a great name, you can also gain information about the trends and the new things that you should know. This will be your advantage.
    • Use the Social media. Social media is great, if you know how to use it accordingly. Because of the fact that there are millions of people who are using social networking sites, then you will have a bigger ground where you can promote your forum. For an instance, you can build a small Facebook fan/community page and ask your real friends and Facebook friends to join in. Make sure that the page is interesting because that will be their sneak-peak to the exact forum. Encourage your moderators to join you in the advertising process.
    • Do blogging. There are also numerous of people who are using blogs, this could be useful as well.
Problems that are Usually Being Faced By Forum Owners:

    • No one wants to join your forum because it is new.
    • The people who joined your forum are not active.
    • Members don't want to post new threads of even reply to the threads.
    • People joined but they just spam.
    • Lack of ideas on what are new to cater to the people.
    Solutions to the Problems:
    • It is really hard to encourage the people to join your new forum because people would rather stay in an old lively community than to join a new one, but by doing the things above and by being sure that you have something unique to offer, then you will have a chance. What you need to do at first is to make some accounts, customize it to make it look like a real person. It is some kind of fooling people to join, but this is what you need in order for them to join. People will join if they see that some others joined your forum. Most of the forum owners also do this kind of thing.
    • You can encourage them to post valuable threads and make a helpful replies in threads by giving them something worth posting for. There are many reasons why a person replies to a thread in forum. First, they can relate to it and second, their goal is to gain posts to be promoted as a community moderator. I have seen so many forums that use this strategy, and it worked pretty well.
    • By being active, you can monitor your website well. Delete spams and ask your moderators to regularly monitor spammers.
    • In order for you to have plenty of ideas, you must read and read and read blogs, articles, and other people's posts in the internet. The internet is giving you a free access to sites which could give you the trends.
These are just some. Feel free to comment and share your ideas and your experiences.

I read your post and found it quite interesting. I agree with you that people generally do not want to post in a new forum even they get dofollow back links. Perhaps they do no like typing posts in forums.

Establishing forum website is really a tough job because it requires consistency with the admins and moderators to be able to maintain the good reputation of the site and filtering those people that are trying to populate the threads with non sense post or what we called spam.

In forums it is very essential that every member should feel responsible of being a member of the community.
