Make sure you diversity your backlinks though, Google bots will not always pick up on all your links, so if you have a bunch coming from one source they may not count all of them. Submit to directories with high page ranks, post articles with your site as its source, and continue to post in forums with your sites link in the signature. It’s a process that you should never stop working at. Eventually it does get easier though.

In my own experiences, putting your homepage link in your tweets would be really helpful for prompt indexing purpose. Also, building backlinks from high PR (above 6) sources would also help your new sites in speedy indexed.

As far as i know submitting your website page or post page to social bookmarking will help you being index by search engine. Other than that you can even ping your site to give spider bots to visit your site.

Once your website has been optimize on-pages, start link building it (I usually starting via putting it in my forums sigs).

as already stated, submit to good directories, search engines, have divers backlinks, use social bookmarking and so on...

I use forum signatures and social bookmarking, maybe the odd directory.

Adding your site to Digg is the fastest way in my mind to get a new site indexed by Google.

I agree with the majority: good backlinks are really important for google bot to find your site, and you should also submit to directories, write articles and use social bookmarking sites.

I think pinging services and website review sites are very helpful to index site very fast...

put our sitemap too (I'm using plugin google xml sitemap)

If your using Wordpress it mechanism will already be structured to ping and help increase its index rate. Using some helpful plugins related to SEO and building backlinks helps to make your site index much faster. Posting fresh post each day is also a factor to make your post to index more.
Getting your site into the authority DMOZ does also helps regardless of what people is saying. One of my sites is listed in DMOS and usually all of my post gets indexed usually max 1 minute and gets ranked in the first page max 5 minutes time. Shows that Google does look to your site as a bit of authority when you get listed. Though it could possibly due to the other acts above - backlinks and fresh content each day. Emm...
