Domain does not effects on traffic however on ranking there are hundreds of different variables that search engines consider when determining his ranking results and one of which is definitely the domain name of the site.

The domain name does not effect traffic and ranking by itself unless you bought an expired domain with a decent amount of history/links...

The domain name can aid in the process of creating traffic and ranking for certain keywords...

Its a small piece of the puzzle but there are some benefits to having a great domain...

I hate to say this(even admit this) but is damn near impossible to beat another webmaster with the keyword in domain. I spent years trying to beat my competitor for a major keyword and could never take it from him. D: I finally just settled for being #2.

Nothings impossible my friend lol, It is hard to break a keyword domain , especially if its got some authority for the 1st place too, but you just have to think out side of the box ( no im not talking black hat  ) and really analyse what they are doing ( if anything ) Eventually you will break them.
