When you design your pages and put external links do you put the "target=_blank" or "target=_new" attribute to make the page open in a new window ?

I personally find it irritating when my browser opens another tab or window with out me actually wanting it to

Yes, I agree on the annoying part, but...
The actual underlying thing is that there is higher chance for the visitor to close the popup/new tab and return to the first site rather than ever going with the back button.
So, having in mind this most website owners prefer using new window for external links.
It's the compromise to be made.
