They're actually different platform so you can't compare them in terms of general use as web cms. But Wordpress have long been a reliable and reputed blog or cms platform. Magento is for direct seller's Cms while Wordpress basically offers a blogging platform.

Yes, you can do that. Just search some plugins that support e-commerce or online store set ups. You can also look through Paypal services for the payment scheme. I read that wordpress and paypal are business partners.

From personal experience, I've noticed that Google quite loves WordPress. Not sure why though, it just does.

Basically both are made for different purposes. Wordpress is made to serve blogs and Magento is a shopping cart created for managing ecommerce stores. Thus, it cannot be compared, however, both are effective and given similar importance by Google search engine.

I've also found this to be true. I've done some modest backlinking for our main website, in professional services, and that was helping to slowly but surely climb our ranking for the coveted keyword we chase. However, having a Wordpress blog on our server and even having added just one or two articles every couple of weeks has had a remarkable effect of shooting us up in the listings. We have a Google page rank of 4, with a website that has only existed not even three months. Thank you wordpress! :D

Oh, I have a blog in Wordpress but not familiar with Magento yet. Thanks for this comparison. I am glad Google (for unclear reasons) loves Wordpress more :). Thanks for this thread and to the respondents.

Wordpress is simple and efficient tool in creating any kind of web-sites. Earlier it was very popular among bloggers, but now its popularity grows even in the niche of e-commerce due to massive offers of special plugins and themes.

We're comparing apples and oranges. WP is for content creation, magento is a shopping cart. Coming to your second question, I'd say that it's a good idea to use WP all along. There's some excellent plugins for ecommerce and the themes can be also nicely customized.
