I dont personally think that the design of a directory is incredibly important on directories because webmasters literally spend less than a minute on a directory.

The only time it should really be considered is if the directory was for professionals and actually did moderate their listings so there was some qaulity in there.

What do you think, nice to see a well designed directory or not ?

Design really important for directory's ?, well yes and not and here's why:

YES: If you are talking about a paid directory (not a free one) that ask to pay for example $30 or more for a submission i check not only the PR, categories, traffic and so on but also the design. Why?, i'll respond with a question: if a directory ask $30 or more but uses a poor, not proffesional layout means (at least to me) that owner haven't even a buck to spend on his own site so it makes me think a bit... also at the end the layout must be valid following the W3C rules, if not then i suppose owner is a newbie or maybe a scammer.

NO: If the directory it's almost a PR5 from several updates, reaches a good traffic, is well organized, and online for at least 3 years then i can consider to use it (and pay the service) even if layout is a disaster.

But if you are talking about free directories then of course i never pay atention to design. What you think?, am i wrong?.

That's due almost all those directories are phpLD based ( don't missunderstand me, phpLD is fantastic and cheap as script but is hard to find a decent theme or skin for it). I used it for years and i loved it but for the skin i found just one or two nice designs...
