Hi guys, it's been a while since I've visited TriPHP. I recently came from a trip overseas. So, I was just wondering, does anyone have any recommendations in regard to a dedicated server or upper end VPS?
WiredTree.com seem to be the best dedicated (and now VPS) hosting company as their support is second to none and every review I have ever seen about them is positive. You can't go wrong there... Word on the street is they are the best
Make sure you find a company that has been in business for more than 5 years. There are a ton of fly-by-night hosting companies out there who will be out of business in a year or two and so will your server. WiredTree looks good, but their prices are kinda high and it looks like they've only been in business for around 4 years or less.. I would try forked.net. They include everything and they have good local support too.
A VPS gives the customer almost the same features like a Dedicated server but the resources such as disk space, bandwidth, RAM etc assigned to a VPS are less in comparison to the Dedicated server. VPS is used by customers who want to have the same features like a Dedicated server but do not have the usage so if you wish to have features like a Dedicated server but do not require the resources assigned to it, then you can surely consider a VPS. The difference between both of them is that with dedicated you are the only person with files on the server. VPS is a virtualization environment where everyone gets root access inside a virtual machine
You will possibly get more recommendations if you put more light on what kind of vps/dedicated solutions you are looking for.. For eg, if you are looking for linux or windows vps/dedicated? Managed / Unmanaged? any benchmark specs in mind that you would like to have? Monthly budget? With or without control panel? And the most important thing, what kind of websites you wish to host? I mean if it is an extremely high resource consuming website, then you will definitely like to go to dedicated rather than a vps.
I was just looking into mediatemple.net earlier. They have a special setup that if you server gets hammered for any reason with traffic, it can scale without any problems or taking your server down. Quite nice actually.
There are plenty of vps providers out there. Tektonic is a good unmanaged provider, or if you need a managed vps, I'd go with wiredtree.
Re Managed Hosting Providers server utilize extreme security measures to ensure the safety of data stored on their network of servers. Providers will often deploy various software programs for scanning systems and networks for obtrusive invaders, spammers, hackers, and other harmful problems. Managed web hosting is ideal for any webmaster that is not familiar with the various aspects of server management and administration. Web servers are technical devices that require maintenance in order to function properly, and unfortunately most people simple do not possess the skill or the technical knowledge to keep their web server operating smoothly. You might want to check out the Rackspace Cloud (formerly Mosso). They provide a decent service, actually, several decent services.
VPS hosting is really a good option for those companies who requires more server resources than share hosting account. Virtual server allows to run its own full-fledged operating system, and be independently rebooted. While there are times where it is better to go with dedicated server hosting. Dedicate server gives the company the complete control of the dedicated server, and also makes the server very secure, stable, powerful, extremely reliable web hosting server.
Well, this completely depends upon the website and its requirements. Usually, dedicated servers are used to host mission-critical sites that requires high availability and reliability with 100% guaranteed uptime. Whereas, VPS is an ideal solution for medium as well as large sized businesses. As VPS is created on the same node by dividing a single physical server into multiple isolated servers is basically known as vps server. All that you can do on a dedicated server can be done on a VPS. You get a greater flexibility to perform the tasks you want. These servers offers same reliability, availability, performance, security and uptime as a dedicated server. In terms of price, VPS is much affordable for any business as it costs much low than a dedicated hosting.
You should also consider multiple VPS account rather than single physical server machine. Sometimes this works really better regarding to cost saving. You'll definitely get more privileges with dedicated server environment, but then price matters.
Having multiple VPS will cost you the same, instead I will suggest you to go for a dedicated server or a cloud server, if you are tight on your budget. Cloud could be a better option over VPS, as it is more scalable, reliable and available all the time.
If I am not mistaken many customers opt multiple VPS accounts instead of using dedicated server. However, choosing between VPS and dedicated server depends on the website requirements. If website have a less less amount traffic, a VPS would be fine option. However, you need to consider VPS with a hosting company who allows easy upgrades to next level. So when you require to move from VPS to Dedicated hosting it will become easier. And If your website requires more resources at initial stage then definitely you should opt Dedicated server hosting.
Dedicated web hosting is expensive and shared web hosting does not enable a client to enjoy benefits as dedicated hosting does. VPS hosting is a mid way between the two, providing the best of both the world: exclusiveness of the former and low cost of the latter.
Having multiple VPS is a kind of hassle, for an example, maintaining multiple vps could be a trouble and time consuming, instead a managed dedicated server does not require to manage anything, as it fully managed by the provider itself. In addition to that, you get root access to the server to perform any actions you want. Also, a cloud is a set of shared servers that provide resources, software, and data to computers and other devices on demand. It can be controlled and expand with adding as many servers as you need, according to your growing business. Cloud services is divided in three main categories, that are Infrastructure as a service, platform as a service and software as a service. Now-a-days, most of the businesses are opting to cloud services as clouds are scalable and can be expanded according to the needs.
Don't you think that managing hundreds of websites from one web server will save much of your time, whereas, if you opt for multiple VPS, you will have to go through every vps and manage each website. With dedicated you can allot resources for each website, so that they will not affect other sites on the same server. Also, you can add as many websites in one control panel and manage them easily.
VPS servers are scalable so environment with VPS is quite good enough and if customer having tight budget then VPS hosting definitely a good choice. In order to provide legitimate services to our customers, we allow multiple VPS accounts according to their requirements. The reason behind this, we always consider things fluctuate with different facts (specially with E-commerce Website). I don't know about your experience, but our customers don't have any trouble to manage their various VPS accounts. Yes this is fact that dedicated server is the best choice in terms of features and performance, but then price matters and sometimes customers looking for affordable solution and not willing to pay for dedicated server. So regarding to customer's benefits we allow them to opt multiple VPS accounts because sometimes it is cost effective solution for them. And in order to upgrade RAM/Drive/CPU on dedicated server, there would have to be a scheduled downtime, but this is not the always case with VPS. The concept of virtualization makes the management of VPS servers easier so VPS can easily exists migrated between various nodes with zero downtime.
Re : Another difference is that currently, we have no solution to add more than 2 IP's to a VPS, where as you can add multiple IP's to a dedicated server.
