Of all the functionalities of windows “control panel” is very important as it allows us to control all the applications and hardware settings that are related to our PC. This controls several features like accessibility options, add or remove programs, add or remove windows components, add hardware, administrative tools, date and time, display, folder options, fonts etc. In this way control panel controls each and every part of the computer and allows us to customize. Before using the computer, it is essential to know about this control panel as this is a key for running the computer and we can face any problem that we may get.

    Accessibility options:

Accessibility options includes customizing the properties related to keyboard, sound, mouse, display, mouse and general because these are the devices that we use for accessing all the applications. The keyboard options include the use and customization of sticky bits, filter keys and toggle keys. Regarding sound we can customize the sound that comes when a warning message popup. Display includes the blink rate and width of the cursor, contrast of the cursor etc. Options for mouse include usage of the mouse keys to control the pointer with the numeric keypad on our keyboard.

    Add hardware:

Through this we can install software to support the hardware we add to our computer and troubleshoot the problems that we may have with our hardware. This is used only when we are adding new hardware that doesn’t comes along with our PC.

    Add or remove programs:

This is one of the best tools in windows that give the usability to all the users. Through this we can view all the softwares that were installed in our PC and we can view some of the details like size and date when they were installed. We can remove them directly by just clicking “Remove” button. This usability is not present any of the other OS which need so many commands to install as well as remove an application. Along with Add or Removing the Programs we will also get the other options like add new programs by which we can install new programs, Add or Remove Windows Components through which we can add some of the components those doesn’t comes with the installation like fax services, installation of IIS server, indexing services, message queuing, management and monitoring tools etc. and Set Program Access and Defaults helps us to specify the default programs for certain activities such as browsing or sending e-mail and programs that are accessible from the start menu.

    Administrative tools:

The tools that are included are component services, computer management, data sources, event viewer, local security policy, performance, services. Component services include the support for COM+ applications, DCOM config, Distributed transaction coordinator and running processes. Event Viewer stores all the events related to the work that we do including event log, service control manager, security, office sessions etc. Services tool of this component services shows all the services that we are provided now with the present hardware and details like description, status etc. Performance tool is system monitor and supports the detailed monitoring of the operating system resources with the graphs for every second by collecting and viewing real-time performance data on a local computer or from several remote computers.

    Automatic updates:

Through this tool we can set the option for automatic updates and we can set the time and date for the updating event to occur. This updating of the operating system is very important as the developers always try to resolve the new complaints that were faced by several users and try to help us by developing new programs for those programs. If we run those new updates we can ensure that those problems won’t occur to our PC.

    Date and time:

This is very simple tool through which we can change the time and date and also time zone of our region and we can set our time to internet time from a server.

    Display:

Through this we can change the desktop background, set the screen saver of our interest and we can change the settings and appearance also.

    Folder options:

Through this we set the properties related to the cascading of folders, view and hiding of the folders, file types etc. We can hide the folders by selecting the option “don’t show the hidden files” in View option and then selecting hide folder after right clicking on the required folder that we want to hide.

    Fonts:

This folder contains all the available fonts. If we want to view a page in a font that is not present in this folder then we can add that font into this folder and we can view that page in the font we require.

    Mouse:

Through this we can see the properties of mouse like its movement sensitivity, double click sensitivity, select the style of the mouse cursor etc.

    User accounts:

This is very important to disallow others to use your PC illegally and we can protect our PC through setting a username and password. There are two kinds of users. One is administrative which has all the permissions regarding the control of the system and general user who will be provided only certain functionalities and permissions to change the system configurations.

There are several different kinds of tools and most of them already discussed in previous posts. So I have provided the information about important tools that we need to know in control panel.
