Yes, choosing an operating system should depend on various requirements. Some of the programming languages are compatible with only Windows and some with Linux. However, if your requirement is only PHP and MySQL then any platform could be used as both of compatible with Linux and Windows OS.

And when we talk about security, it needs to be said that a serious problem regarding this aspect with Windows, but on the other side Linux is always known as a pretty secure OS. I think Linux has hired a huge number of top level programmers from the underground world of virus development so they are well known about security loop holes.

Its really very important to choose the operating system which suits your requirements. Some people choose windows because they think that Windows works for them because Windows is installed at their computer but there is nothing like that. Operating system is on Server end not on computer.

And I am sure new generation won't like to spend huge money on licensing cost for OS and its relevant applications.

It is very important to choose the operating system which matches your requirements. Both Windows and Linux have different FTP commands.

Yes it is very important. If your website is Php, Flash Html based than linux hosting suits for you and if your website is built in Asp asp.net then windows hosting works for you.
