It is essential to choose the right keyword for your site, so that when you optimize it it will rank well. People who search on your keywords will find you if you are listed higher in the returned list of sites on each search engine. But, single keywords alone don't mean much, since research shows that most search engine queries are a combination of key phrases that people use to narrow down the most pertinent sites returned for exactly what they're looking for. People don't search on single keywords alone, unless they are looking for a name brand or high profile site that's well known through other avenues of advertising and marketing.

Absolutly , I actually find most searches come from longer tail keywords unless people are searching for something specific , When optimising a new or old site i normally do my usual Keyword research but then also go and ask my friends and family " what would you type into google to find this ? "

Normally the results they give me are much more informative because they are not in the industry and they are the end user.

I think it works well like that.

Latest hint that seems very promising is to use idioms / synonym dictionaries, but the pie's cherry one was to look at urbandictionary.com - I think this one can be very useful if you're targeting younger audience, n'est pas :)
