You're right, what's the use. First of all information is not, and cannot be, updated that often on the SE indexes side, so there is really no need of that.

I don't rely on any tool to check backlinks. Instead I use google, yahoo and bing for this purpose.

I am also checking for the free backlink checker tool. Nothing available so I do competitors backlinks search in yahoo.
