Implementing support for a canonical page is easy, at least in technical terms. In many cases, it may be more difficult to determine where duplicates may be an issue within your site and which page to specify as the URL to index. Read on for help with both.
The first step in providing a canonical tag for the search engines is to decide where you may have duplicate content within your website. This isn’t always as simple as it may sound. Let’s recap a few ways that duplicate content might be a problem and what the canonical URL for those pages should be....

In SEO Some time we want to place same content on same page for more than one time, At that time
Canonical tag are used to inform search engine crawlers that this is self created duplicate.

Canonical tag is very useful now because your site might have duplicate content as well as duplicate meta description & duplicate title tag issues which can be solved by using canonical tags. For example,
your site has yoursite dot com, yoursite dot com/index.html & yoursite dot com/home

All these 3 pages are same & Google might be considering all 3 pages different, so it can come under duplicate content issues. So You can use canonical tag in yoursite dot com/index.html & .yoursite dot com/home so that Google will know that these 2 pages are same as the original one.

Canonical tag are used under the HTML <head> tag. rel="canonical" to indicate your preferred URL, but we can't guarantee to follow that url..

Canonical tag should be used in the head section in order to redirect the page. It is used for redirection of the page.

Canonical tag is basically to normalize multiple URL's for single piece of content.

The canonical tag is a new tag proposed by Google, designed to minimize crawl errors and the indexing of duplicate content in your website. Support for the tag has been adopted by most of the search engines, and it’s a good idea to add to your own website if you want to get your best search engine rankings.
